Be it a newspaper or a novel or even your study material. Reading helps you enhance your vocabulary. When you find yourself comfortable with words, you won't ever draw a blank or find yourself struggling with words while communicating.
While reading, if you encounter some words that you've never heard before, mark them.

Dictionary:

Make the dictionary a friend. Look up all the words that you've marked and get to know what they mean. Maintain a small diary of these words if you like.
Make it a point to incorporate these words in your day-to-day conversations.
Also give special attention to the little abbreviations written next to these words in the dictionary. They specify if the word is a noun/verb/adjective/adverb etc. This makes you strong on the grammar front and helps you avoid embarrassment due to wrong usage.
The dictionary also specifies if the word is colloquial or slang, so that you know which words to use and which not to, in formal letters or speeches.

Pronunciation and Accent:

Most of the dictionaries include tips on pronunciation. Take the effort to work on your pronunciation.
There are a lot of self help books and websites available which will guide you to work on this.
Watch English shows on the television and listen to English songs. Sing them aloud.
Speak to the little kids in your colony. It won't make you awkward even if you go wrong and there's is a lot that can be learned from kids rather than elders.
Watch news channels. They serve the dual purpose of improving your language as well as keeping you well informed.
