WHAT IS PROCESSOR CACHE

Why do we need processor cache?

Now, let's see what happens in the presence of a cache memory. In our library example, let's consider a drawer at the librarian's desk as a cache. The procedure remains the same, when the first person places a request for a book. But, when the book is returned, the librarian does not store it on the shelf, instead keeps it in her drawer. Now, when the next person comes and places a request for the same book, the librarian simply has to retrieve it from her drawer. In a similar way, cache memory stores the data items that are frequently required by the processor. Thus, every time, the data is requested, processor simply looks in the cache and retrieves it, saving a long trip to the main memory.

Does cache memory store only the frequently used data items?

No, cache memory is a smart piece of memory that also looks for the data that is likely to be requested in the near future. Continuing with our library example; when the person requests for Harry Potter Part I, our intelligent librarian also fetches Harry Potter Part II along with it. Now, when the person is done with the first book, it is very likely that he might ask for the second part. And when he does, librarian has it ready in her drawer. Similarly, when the cache memory fetches data items from the main memory, it also fetches the items that are located at the addresses near the requested items. These adjacently located chunks of data which are transferred to the cache is called as the cache line.

Two-level processor cache

Most hard drives and other components make use of a single-level cache. But a processor cache is a two-level cache, in which level 1 cache (L1) is smaller and faster; while level 2 cache (L2) is slightly slower, but anytime faster than the main memory. L1 cache is divided into two parts viz., instruction cache and data cache. Instruction cache stores the set of instructions that are required by the CPU for computing; while the data cache stores the values that are required for current execution. L2 cache is responsible for loading the data from the main memory. Again, coming back to our library example, consider a librarian's drawer as L1 cache. On any busy day, when the demand for books is high and the librarian has already stored many books in her drawer, chances are that it might get full pretty quickly. This is where L2 cache comes into the picture. Consider a bookcase near the librarian's desk as L2 cache. When the drawer fills up, the librarian starts storing the books in the bookcase. Now, whenever there is a demand for some popular book, the librarian first looks in her drawer; if the book is not found there, she searches it in the bookcase. Similarly, when L1 cache is full, data is stored in L2 cache. The processor first looks for the data in L1 cache, and if it is not found, then only L2 is searched. If the data is not found in L2 as well, a trip to main memory is inevitable.

Is implementing more cache a good idea?

Yes and no, as implementing more cache will let you fetch data quickly, only in the cases, when the data is available in either L1 or L2. Coming back to our library example. If a person requests a popular book, which is not stored in the librarian's drawer or the bookcase; she first looks for it in the drawer and then in the bookcase. This way, lot of time is wasted before she finally retrieves it from the bookshelf. Similarly, the processor checks first in L1 and then, in L2, and when the item is not found in either cache, then only sends a request to the main memory

USE OF PRINT SCREEN

How to Use Print Screen
Now that we know, we can use print screen to copy the screen we currently see, let's see how to take a screenshot and actually go about using it.

Open the screen that you wish to copy.
Now press the print screen key ('PrtScn'), and the mirror image of that screen will be stored on your desktop.
Now you need to open an image editing application like Microsoft Paint for instance.
Paste the screen shot here either by pressing Control+V, or by going to the Edit menu and then selecting Paste.
Now, you can either enlarge this image or you can even crop it, as you may see fit.
Save the file at a suitable location and it is now ready for use. You can either view it and use it for some other purpose or you can even send it to someone else.

You can even use print screen on laptop for a similar purpose, but you will have to locate the key first. Different brands of laptops have different nomenclatures and different positions for the print screen key.

There are 2 things that you must remember once you have learned how to use print screen. Firstly, the image that you save, will be saved in the Bitmap (.bmp) format. You can also change the format to GIF. Do not use the JPEG format as this makes the text unclear and blurry sometimes. Secondly, you can press ALT + PrtScn to copy a screen shot of a selected window on your screen, instead of the entire screen itself. This tool means that you do not have to crop the image in your image editing program.

How to Use Print Screen in Mac OS
An Apple Mac is very different from a machine using Windows XP or Windows Vista Operating System, and it does not contain a print screen button. This does not mean that this machine cannot perform this task. As a matter of fact it can, but the method of doing so is slightly different from that of a Windows based computer. You can use one of the following methods.

Method # 1

Open the screen that you wish to capture.
Press the 'Apple' key + Shift + 3 together and then release all.
Using your mouse, click on the window.
The image of your screen shot will automatically be saved on your desktop.

Method # 2

This is for capturing just a portion of your screen.
Open the screen and press the Apple key + Shift + 4.
The mouse cursor will change to a + sign. You can use this to drag and highlight the area that you want to capture.
Once you have done that you will see the file of your saved image on your desktop.

BASIC COMPUTER PARTS

Basic Computer Parts and Functions

Monitor
The computer monitor is the screen on the computer on which we can see what we are doing. The monitor is an output device which shows us how the computer is interpreting our inputs through various input devices. The monitor is our way of knowing whether the computer has understood our commands or not. The simplest example of this is typing. When we type a word on the keyboard, it comes up on the monitor. By this we know that the computer is able to understand what we are typing.

Keyboard
The second most basic computer part is the computer keyboard. The keyboard is an input device which we use to enter data. Keyboard helps us tell the computer what we want it to do. So whether we want to type some numbers or some letters, we tell the computer what it is we want to type by 'keying' in the corresponding letters on our keyboard.

Mouse
The computer mouse is a device which helps us navigate through different programs. The mouse is a kind of facilitator on the computer and helps us give the computer commands which the keyboard cannot. Or commands which would otherwise take a longer time to give on the keyboard. For instance, if you want to start Internet Explorer on your computer, you can press a succession of keys and get there, or simply double-click the Internet Explorer icon with the mouse. The mouse makes a lot of things simpler.

CPU
The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is known as the brain of the computer. The CPU helps the computer receive, analyze and make sense of the input. The CPU also, based on the input, helps computer generate the output. CPU helps coordinate all the inputs and outputs of the computer.

Like a brain has one sense-and-respond wing and a memory wing, so does the CPU. While CPU helps the computer give the outputs based on the inputs, it also helps 'save' important stuff. It has a computer memory area which can help in data storage and hence when you save a file, it is saved into the memory of the computer.

CD Drive
The CD Drive is an appendage to the CPU. A lot of times, we need to bring data from another computer to our computer. We bring it in the form of an external memory device known as a CD (Compact Disc). Now in order to transfer the information and data on the CD to the computer, we need to have a device which will help you 'read' what's written on the CD. This is where the CD drive comes in. The CD drive helps the computer read information off the CD.

PC FACTS

PC - Computer Facts

According to the available statistics, it took 38 years for radio to reach 50 million users, 13 years for TV, and only 5 years for the Internet.
One of the most interesting PC computer facts is that early hard drives in PCs held 20 Megabytes (MB), and cost about $800 whereas an $8 flash drive today holds 2 Gigabytes (GB) computer memory. That's a 100-fold 'decrease' in price for a 100-fold 'increased' computer performance!
PC viruses are little files or codes that have been written to ruin your computer. So you need to install an Anti-Virus scanner, no matter you're connecting to the Internet or not. AVG antivirus is quite popular today. A 'firewall' is another way of defense which helps to block other computers and programs from connecting to you and playing with your stuff.
Computers history facts tell us that first commercial computer was introduced in 1951 by John Presper Eckert & John W. Mauchly from UNIVAC Computer and in 1953, International Business Machines (IBM) entered into the field of computers.
The first computer mouse was introduced in 1968 by Douglas Engelbart at the Fall Joint Computer Expo in San Francisco.
The first consumer computers were introduced by IBM in 1974/75. In 1981, Microsoft introduced the computer operating system of the century. User friendly Microsoft Windows was first introduced in November 1985.
Tim Berners-Lee in 1990 first coined the phrase 'World Wide Web' and he is considered as father of Internet. The Internet gained popularity with the release of the first popular web browser Mosaic in 1993.
Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built the first Apple computer from parts they got for free from their employers. Their idea for a 'PC' was rejected by the employers!
One of the the most amazing PC computer facts is that the computer mouse, the windowing GUI, laser printing, and the network card were all developed at one company, 'Xerox' in Palo Alto, California.
Do you know that the computer in your cell phone has more processing power than all the computers in the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander that helped 2 men to land on the moon?

HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY DOES A COMPUTER USE

Factors Affecting Electrical Power Usage of Computer
A computer is a substantially complex device and each one of its hardware parts including the processor, motherboard, peripherals and accessories requiring varying amounts of electrical power. The total power consumption of a computer is decided by the sum total of electrical power requirements of all the hardware parts. The power rating of the processor, hard drive types used, power rating of the graphics card, optical drives, memory modules and overall usage pattern decides how much power will be consumed by a computer.

The SMPS or the power supply of the computer is designed to provide adequate power to all these various computer parts. Usually, branded desktop manufacturers may provide you with an estimate of the maximum power consumption of your computer in manuals, but the actual power consumption is much lesser. Basic tasks like word processing consume less power, while gaming, burning DVDs and other such complex tasks make the computer consume more power.

How Much Electricity Does a Desktop Computer Use?
A desktop computer may use anywhere between 60 watts to more than 250 watts of power. Add to this, about 75 more watts of power consumed by an LCD monitor. This takes the total power consumption to a range between 135 watts to more than 300 watts. Of course, the actual power consumption will vary according to the configuration of the computer and its usage.

How Much Electricity Does a Laptop Computer Use?
Compared to a desktop computer, a laptop uses substantially lesser amount of power. An average laptop will consume about 45 to over 70 watts of power. So for prolonged usage, a laptop is certainly a better option compared to a desktop from the power saving view point. If you want to determine how much electricity does a computer use in a day, multiply the hourly consumption by the number of hours the computer is used. To get a cost estimate of the consumed power per day or month, divide the value of total power consumed by 1000 and multiply it by the cost of electricity per kilowatt hour, charged by your electric company.

Tips on Saving Electric Power While Using Computers
For some of you who wonder how much electricity does a computer use in sleep mode, know that it is less than 10% of the power used in operating mode. Only 6 watts to 15 watts of power will be consumed when the computer is in the sleep mode. So choosing a power saver plan and letting the PC go to sleep or hibernate when not in use, is a good way of saving electricity.

If you use an LCD monitor, keeping the brightness levels of the screen to be low, will use up a lesser amount of power. Screensavers do not save power but only entertain! Switching off your computer is a better option, compared to letting it sleep or putting it on standby. Follow these economy tips to bring down the electricity bills.

FASHION ADVICE FOR TEENAGE

Fashion Tips for Teenage Girls

When it comes to style advice for teenage girls, or fashion advice for teenage girls, one needs to be overly cautious. It's not just about making the girl wear the latest clothes. It's about helping her to identify with her inner self and recognizing what is going to help her enhance her best features. Just giving a girl a lecture about what you think is the best for her is not enough. She should be able to relate to what you're saying. And it's not like fashion questions for teenage girls are very difficult to answer. You just need to put yourself in their place, but advice them from the point of view of a person who will be looking at them (literally). So, let's check out some very simple and unfortunately cliché fashion and costume advice for teenage girls.

Stick to Basics
What goes into having a perfect wardrobe that boasts of something nice to wear during every season? What do you need to lay the foundation of a wardrobe so awesome, that you don't need to spend hours agonizing over the dreaded 'what to wear' question? It's the basics! Or essentials if you will. Honestly, there is nothing more simple to understand than the 'stick to basics' philosophy. So what do the basics encompass? Here's a list of some of the items, whose importance and contribution to your wardrobe you should NEVER underestimate.

Well Fitting Jeans: If you haven't come across a girl who wears jeans that are either so tight, they threaten to explode, or so loose, they look like they're hung on a hanger, then you live in a perfect world. I am yet to find a dictionary in which the word 'fitting' means 'extra-tight-to-the-point-of-tearing-if-worn-when-seated'. Girls, we know you're at an age when the first and last thing on your mind is how you look. So please, refrain from wearing jeans that are too snug or too loose. Flaunt your body, but do it with dignity.
Tops: T-shirts, tanks, spaghetti straps, the world is your oyster! You need to have these in some really strong colors that will complement your skin tone and your body type. Do not go in for an ill-fitting top. Your upper body needs to breathe, so you need to have something that will facilitate this basic necessity of life. At the same time, having just sweatshirts and loose tees will take away the femininity from your wardrobe. Include smart button-down shirts and classy jackets in neutral colors for the winters.
Skirts and Shorts: If you know how to look good in shorts, then nothing should stop you from flaunting your legs in the summer. Follow the cardinal rule of not too tight, not too loose for them as well. If you're more of a 'girly' girl, then you need a collection of pretty skirts in varying lengths: short, medium and long. You can team the extremely short ones with leggings, wear the medium ones as they are and heavily accessorize with the long ones for an ultra-chic Boho look!
Shoes: You need comfortable footwear for ever season. For the summer, flip-flops, slippers, thongs work well. For the winter go with closed shoes like flat pumps or boots. Don't wear extremely high heels. They could lead to other problems later on. For the monsoon, you can have a cute pair of rainy boots.
Accessories: There is no shortage of fashion accessories for teens. There are so many shops that are bursting with stuff that you can accessorize with. But what you need always is some nice belts, scarves, a nice pair of eyeglasses, some simple jewelry and a perfect attitude to match them.

Once you have the basics of your wardrobe covered, the rest is just psychological.

Be Comfortable
You must have heard this a million times, but that does not dilute its importance. You need to be absolutely comfortable in what you're wearing. Else, all the 'advice' given above or in any other forum that you may read mighty as well be tossed out of the window. Let's put it this way. You like this boy at school and you want to look nice for him. You can dress up in some great trendy teen clothing, but if half of your attention is focused on whether your skirt is too short or your shirt is too transparent, it's going to show on your face, or worse in that oh-so-interesting conversation about dissecting a cockroach that you were having with him. Take it from someone who's had such unfortunate encounters as an adolescent, it will scar you, for the rest of the week, if not for life!

Mood Ring Color Chart Meaning

Black: This color signifies very intense emotion like stress, anger and mystery. This shade shows up when the person wearing the ring is nervous or tense about something.

Gray: Say you are sitting in your class and your teacher catches you sleeping. He then tells you to come up and sing a song. Well, I'm guessing you can't sing, so look down at your ring and it will be gray. So when a person is nervous or anxious, the ring will change the color to gray.

Amber: This is a yellow shade. Yellow usually shows up when you are going through a change in emotions or if you are experiencing a range of emotions. You could be feeling vague, tired or distracted.

Red: This color shows up when one is experiencing strong emotions like passion, love, adventure, excitement and eagerness. Red can also signify fear, anger and insecurity.

Magenta: This color will show up when you are in a happy mellow mood like when you head to the mall with your girlfriends. If you find yourself feeling all warm and affectionate, like when you see your puppy running towards you, take a look at your ring, it will be magenta in color.

Brown: This color shows up when you are puzzled, restless or worried. Like say, for example you are taking a math test and you have no idea what the answer to that equation is.

Orange: This is one color that I'm guessing should always be on rings worn by girls. It shows up when one is excited or slightly over the edge and busy searching for the car keys. It also mean that you are feeling daring and are thinking of an idea.

Blue: As far as mood rings are concerned, blue represents being happy and at ease. If you are feeling blissful and content like just after eating a chocolate cake, then the ring is going to be blue.

Dark Blue: Your ring will become dark blue when you are deeply relaxed and feeling romantic. Think of walks on the beach with your crush strolling along with you. Yes, the color on that ring on your finger will be dark blue.

Purple: Purple will show up when you are feeling crabby and moody. It can also signify that you are feeling mystical and sensual. So if you are suddenly feeling desired by your man, then purple is the color you will see.

MOOD RINGS

How Does the Mood Ring Change Colors

Before we get into mood ring color meanings, let us know a little bit about its history and how it is made. It was created by Joshua Reynolds, and ever since the Hippie era, the ring has become a fashion statement. The ring is supposed to be able to change its color, as the mood of the person wearing it, changes. Strange right? Let's see how it accomplishes this? Well, the ring's stone, is made up of liquefied thermotropic crystals. These crystals basically respond to any change in the body temperature of the wearer. So according to what the person is feeling, his or her body temperature changes. When the temperature rises or falls, the stone reacts by shifting its molecules around, which, in turn, causes the color of the stone to change. Sorry to burst any bubble of a 'mystical seeing stone' that you may have had, but that's how a mood ring functions. Nevertheless, you'll definitely want to know what do the colors of a mood ring mean. OPAL JEWELRY

Opals are probably one of the few stones that have a rich folklore behind them. Opals are always in a class by themselves. The colors in the opal jewelry are created by the arrangement of silica spheres within the opal. Common opals do not have the flashes of color. Some of the colors that are widely seen in the opal jewelry are light or dark body colors that maybe either translucent or transparent or milky white, light green and pink. Black opals and black opal jewelry are the most expensive of all opals.

It is the volcanic ash that gives black opal its color. This is entirely due to the tiny spheres. Their body color can range from dark grey to black. These even have fiery flashes of color as well. The hardness of the opals ranges from 5.5 to 6.5. (On the Mohs scale) Australia is known to be the largest and the leading source as far as opals are concerned. Some of the other sources of opals and opal jewelry are from the United States, Africa, Brazil etc. So, how does one go about caring for such precious opal jewelry? Opals would require you to maintain a few rules when it comes to care of opal jewelry. Read on to know some ways.

Tips to Care for your Opal Jewelry:

To avoid damaging your opal jewelry, you need to take it off when you are doing household work or chores. For eg., avoid wearing opal jewelry when you are gardening or a trip to the beach. I know most women would find this process tiresome but it would definitely help to keep all the grime away and avoid any scratches on your opal jewelry. Opal is almost a material like glass, but there are a few exceptions. The glass-like structure makes it vulnerable and opals can easily chip or scratch. Therefore, care for your opal jewelry as if it’s made of glass.
Extreme heat and cold may definitely damage any opal jewelry. This can generally happen when there are sudden and extreme changes of temperature. Everyday changes in temperature may not really affect opals; you must be careful to look out for any extreme change when you are traveling out of town.

HANDCRAFTED DESIGNE

Designer Handcrafted Jewelry: Easy Steps

How to make basic dangle earrings:
You would first need to get some basic headpins and beads of your choice. Always remember to select different proportions for a basic aesthetic balance and colors that compliment each other well. Then, with the head of the headpins towards the bottom side, stack the beads onto the headpins in a pattern that most suits your requirements. Leave around 3/8th of the pin exposed on the top area.

Then, hold the beads firmly against the head with one hand and use round nose pliers to grip the headpin on the area just above the last bead. Bend this wire to an angle of 90 degrees. Ensure you get rid of any excess wire. This should leave about 1/4th of the bent portion of this headpin. Then, use the tip of the pliers to grip the end of the pin. Roll this so that it forms a smooth loop. Now, use the pliers to open the ring on an ear clip. Now, hook the beaded headpin to the ear wire. Close the ring again.

How to make a beaded necklace (also acts as a bracelet):
To make this handcrafted jewelry piece that has your own unique designer touch, there are a few things you will need:
4mm garnet beads -1 16-inch strand
Different types of extra accent beads
Pliers
Glue
Corsage pin
Bead board
Clam shells/bead tips (2)
Toggle clasp (1)
Scissors
Garnet colored nylon beading cord- size 4 (Look for an attached needle)

Firstly, you would need to place the garnet beads on the bead board. Then spread them around the board, begin from the 10-½ inch mark on one side. End at the 10-½ mark on the other side. Now, get creative and start adding some accent beads in between as a way to cover the spaces in between the previous beads. Avoid symmetry in design; try to make it as creative as possible.

Then, use the nylon thread and make around 2-3 knots. Make one above the other and do this at the end of the cord. Now, you need to thread the free end of the thread through the clamshells. These knots will now rest inside the shell. Now, you would need to trim the extra ends of the thread and dab some glue. Then, close the clamshell over the knot with the help of some pliers.

You would now need to string the beads in the same manner as you placed them on the board before. Whilst you are stringing the bead, measure the portion as well. You can adjust the beads as per the length required. Measure the entire piece once you have finished stringing the piece and make sure its approximately 20 inches in length. Now it’s time to add the other clamshell. Face the shell opening to the other side, away from the beads. You would need to tie a loose knot for the remaining portion of the thread. Now, you would also need to insert a corsage pin through the loose knot you have created.

JEWELRY TRENDS

Jewelry Trends for 2011

This season "less is not more", but "more is more". Give your delicate filigree chains and pendants a rest and bring out all the bling. Given below are some of the key fashion jewelry trends 2011.

Statement Necklace
Statement jewelry is very trendy this year and the best way to wear this is to pair it with neutral and solid colored clothing. Statement necklaces just got bigger and bolder this season with huge stones and funky designs. A mix of metals like bronze, silver and gold will be the highlight this season. Choose a statement necklace or bib necklace whose design is inspired by African tribes to make the maximum impact. Unlike last season which saw only precious stones like rubies and emeralds in statement necklaces, this time fashion jewelry trends 2011 focuses on more colored and semi precious stones ranging from amethyst, coral, garnet and tourmaline. Wear a statement necklace that just sits on your collar bone as anything longer than that is so last season. A bib necklace with a mix of stones is just right for this season and many design houses like TopShop and Max and Chloe have a very good collection.

Stacked Bangles and Cuffs
Spring jewelry trends 2011 predicts that bangles and cuffs will be very popular. But just don't wear a single bangle or cuff. You need to stack them up for a chic and casual look. The best thing about wearing stacked bangles is that you can pair them with anything from sundresses to skinny jeans. This look was seen on many celebrities from Drew Barrymore to Sarah Jessica Parker. Create your own unique look by stacking different colored bangles in a mix of metals. Chunkier cuffs are also very popular this season and you can choose cuffs that comes in semi precious stones, leather and even plastic. Handcrafted cuffs with unusual texture in dull gold and rose finish can instantly make you look sophisticated and chic. The thing to remember while trying out this trend is to wear at least 12-15 bangles. They should also be of different colors and designs to give it a more eclectic look.

Layered Chains
The best way to jazz up a simple outfit is to wear layered chains. It is one of the biggest jewelry trends this season which is quite hard to miss. Individual chains can also be piled on to create the look of layered chains. This will give you more flexibility in terms of the look you want to create. When you choose a layered chain, try to find a piece that has a variety of design elements and textures. Silver chains with pearls and crystal beads are great buys for this season. Layered chains with feathers, ribbons, tassels and pearls are also popular this season. For a casual lunch with friends, you can jazz up your simple white T-shirt by wearing a unique mixed media multi layered chain necklace. If you find a piece that has glass, Swarovski crystals, feathers and lace, then you should definitely grab it.

Chandelier Earrings
Women who like dangly earrings should rejoice as jewelry trends 2011 forecasts the return of chandelier earrings. After being banished from the fashion scene last year, chandelier earrings have made a comeback this year. Earrings this season are long, almost shoulder grazers. They are more streamlined and the use of semi precious stones, glass beads and uncut diamonds will be popular. Look out for pieces that comes in deep hues and bright colors like plum, orange, aubergine, cobalt blue and green. These spring colors work well for the evening and you can pair chandelier earrings with floor sweeping gowns as well as a cocktail dress. Large hoop earrings with pave diamonds, metal carvings and feathers will also be popular jewelry trends spring summer 2011.

1980 S FASHION

Fashion in the 80s was also more than just influences from movies and the music industry. It was about a whole lot of people trying to make a statement about their own individuality. High on bling, it was also the time when people turned adventurous in terms of the fabrics being used or the way their hair was styled.

The denim got a new look being acid washed and it found its way into the wardrobes of many. These streaked jeans became hugely popular with both male and female fashion enthusiasts. Teamed with red or black studded jackets (inspired by Michael Jackson) and accessorized with fingerless gloves, it was not an uncommon sight to see the teens trying their best to emulate their pop idols.

This was the time for flashy bling. Right from the shoulder pads to the earrings, it was all screaming for attention. Bands like the ‘Human League’ popularized the asymmetrical look in hairstyle, which could be wild as if teased by the wind or simply splashed with loud colors. Volume for the hair, topped with glitter for some, caught on hugely. Rock bands like ‘Bon Jovi’ and ‘Scorpions ‘, also flaunted their big hair-dos with flamboyance. The old adage ‘Bigger is better’ was truly personified by these groups.

Apart from bling, tattooing, body piercing, wearing multiple watches on one arm or even sporting ‘shades’ at night were some of the varied trends that took shape in the 80s. Teenage boys were known to pierce their ears, irrespective of what the adults would think. Men even went to the extent of using eyeliner and lipstick as worn by the likes of ‘Boy George’.

When it came to footwear for women, things got a little uncomfortable. But the hardcore fashion enthusiasts would do anything for fashion and how! The loud red or pink high-heeled stilettos, which were in vogue, were given stiff competition by see-through flat sandals. These scored high on looks, but were very low on the comfort level, being made of plastic. But like they say, anything for fashion! Colored and metallic clutch bags helped to complete the look.

With the popularity of aerobics, dancewear gained impetus and it was no longer restricted to the dance floor. It became a style statement when combined with casual wear. Available in varied colors, and even sizes, one could simply team them up with denims and boogey the night away. (Inspired from Jane Fonda’s aerobic videos.)

The 80s may not be in fashion now, but it was a period that set many trends, some of which are prevalent even today!

Definitely 80s:

    Shoulder Pads
    Flats
    Heavy Mascara
    Stonewashed Jeans
    Legwarmers

VICTORIAN FASHION

Victorian Fashion:
The term Victorian fashion is generally used only with regard to the United Kingdom. There were certain clothing styles and mannerisms that were observed during this period. In the early period of the Victorian Era, the silhouette for the woman was more of the demure kind. Women wore pointed bodice, which were long and had fitting waists. The bodice was designed to enhance the waist. In the early period, Victorian clothing for women was about restriction of arm movements. Another interesting feature were the detachable collars! The colors used in the early period of the Victorian fashion were soft, pastel shades. Patterns were delicate and fashionable, all designed to maintain the femininity of the woman.

Beehive shaped skirts was another characteristic feature of Victorian fashion. Here, garments were stiffened to give a particular appearance. Crin also known as horsehair, was used for a particular portion of a garment so that it stiffens in that particular area. Crin was used for hem linings and sleeve heads of the dresses.

Although cloth was manufactured in the mills, Victorian clothing in 1837 was generally designed and assembled by tailors and other such specialized people who were into designing clothes and hats. These people catered to only a specific few of the society who could afford this service; others stitched their clothes at home.

Bell shaped skirts also became a rage and these became wider in the 1830s. The bell shape soon became dome shaped. As these skirts became bigger and flared out, they also needed support from the inside. Victorian dresses therefore needed to be worn with a lot of petticoats. The lower portion was also supported by horsehair, which were woven into the pattern for the stiffened look.

The cashmere shawl was also a prominent feature of Victorian fashion. It was particularly noticed in 1840. By then, the shawl was used as wrap over the dresses. Women also wore heavy fabrics such as satins and silks and there was also a time when fabric dictated the status of the person in the society as well.

Slowly these huge ballooned Victorian skirts gave way to the hobble skirts. Hobble skirts brought into fashion narrow skirts, where in knee length corsets were combined with the entire ensemble. Hobble skirts often restricted movement, which is probably why they have been given this name. These slim skirts created a problem for women in the comfort factor yet they gained popularity with time. Today, the slim pencil skirt can still be witnessed in the fashion scenario in many modified ways.

Apart from horsehair, bustles were also used to increase the fullness of the skirts. Bustles were used to make the waist look smaller. Many times, the fullness of the fashion was spread out towards the back and this often fanned out in the shape of a train. Bustles were also seen in different shapes. Sometimes, these also created a hump below the waist area on the backside, which was considered to be a fashion statement in the Victorian era. The bustle therefore, can be considered to be yet another typical feature of Victorian fashion.

PALEO DIET RECIPES

Recipes for the Paleo Diet

In the process of evolution, humans thrived on very basic foods such as game meat that they hunted for (Bear, Kangaroo, Turtle, Reindeer, Wild boar, etc), lean meat (London broil, Pork chops, Lean veal, beef, etc.), fish and shellfish, fowl, roots of plants, leaves, fruits and even flowers. The first methods of eating these foods, before man discovered fire were raw without even cleaning them. But when he realized the digestion problems he had to face because of them, he avoided eating those or cooking them after the discovery of fire.

Foods such as grains, potatoes, beans and others cannot be consumed without cooking and thus they were avoided by the paleolithic man. When man realized the importance of agriculture and domestication, he brought foods such as flour, yogurt, sugar and salt into his diet. Therefore, the paleolithic diet doesn't consist of these foods, but the ones that were eaten raw. However, today, it is not possible to eat these foods in the same manner like the paleolithic man, and thus they are prepared with spices and tasteful ingredients. Here are some paleo diet recipes mentioned just for, take a look.

Industrial uses of xanthan gum includes its role in binding the ingredients of toothpaste. As mentioned above, it is a common ingredient in numerous commercial food products like frozen foods, sauces, ice creams, beverages, salad dressings and many other such products. It is also used in the oil and gas industry, where it is used to thicken the drilling mud. Xanthan gum also plays the role of a lubricant in oil pumps. It is also used as a laxative. It has been suggested that xanthan gum has the potential to reduce high cholesterol levels and high blood sugar. As far as the common man is concerned, handling of xanthan gum is mostly associated with culinary purposes. So, let us take a look at how to use xanthan gum for culinary purposes.

How to Use Xanthan Gum as a Thickener

The use of xanthan gum as a thickener may vary slightly with the type of recipe. For recipes with liquid ingredients, you have to mix xanthan gum in the liquid. It will be better to use a blender for such mixing as xanthan gum may form clumps as soon as it comes into contact with liquid. For every cup of liquid ingredient, you need 1/8 tablespoon of xanthum gum. All you have to do is to get the xanthan gum dissolved in a small amount of liquid that has to be combined with the remaining liquids. In case of sauces and other such recipes, you have to mix xanthan gum in oil, before adding ingredients like soy milk. Some people directly sprinkle xanthan gum into soups, while whisking. You may also mix it with a small amount of liquid that has to be added to the soup.

How to Use Xanthan Gum in Baking

As far as baking is concerned, you have to mix the xanthan gum directly with the flour. Take the dry ingredients in a bowl and combine them with xanthan gum, before adding the wet ingredients. Usually, one teaspoon of xanthan gum is sufficient for every cup of flour, which is used for making cakes and cookies. But, if you intend to make bread, then double the quantity. In other words, two teaspoons of xanthan gum will be required per cup of flour meant for making bread and pizza base. In order to increase the effectiveness of xanthan gum in baked goods, you have to use a combination of different gluten-free flours.

COLD FINGER FOOD IDEAS

Rolls
Like sandwiches, one idea for cold finger foods for kids are the rolls. You can choose to make the rolls and cut them into bite size pieces and use a toothpick to keep the filling in the rolls together. They make for a healthy food option as well. There are a number of ideas, which can be used to make the rolls. My personal favorite are the cucumber smoked salmon rolls. Not only do they taste delicious, but they also qualify for that perfect plate presentation. And making them is not difficult.

Vegetables with Dips
If you are looking for vegetarian finger foods, then this is an idea, which you may want to use. An assortment of vegetables can be placed alongside a dip of your choice. Some of the options include cucumber, cherry tomatoes, salad greens, etc. Some tofu or cottage cheese cubes can also be added to the vegetables.

Cheese as a Starter
One of the simplest of the cold finger foods ideas is to arrange an assortment of cheese. Most people will enjoy the treat. Do not forget to keep toothpicks with the cheese, so that it becomes easier to pick up the cheese cubes. Other than cubes, you may want to try the sticks option as well. You may choose to make cheese bites instead, if you have sufficient time in hand. Since they are baked, they are a healthy option as well.

Garlic Toast
Garlic toast is a great finger food. If you like baking like I do, you may choose to bake the bread at home itself. Making garlic toast will not require a lot of preparation and yet it is something, which is popular in all age groups. If there are left overs, it can also be eaten with the main course. Bruschetta is a good alternative to plain garlic bread and not to forget garlic bread with cheese!

Tortillas with Dip
There may hardly be anyone, who does not savor tortillas. To accompany the tortillas, you can choose to make different dips, like guacamole dip, cheese dips, salsa, etc. The guacamole dip is an all time favorite. If you are not a big fan of tortillas with dips, the other option you have is that of tortilla rolls. Cheese, ham slices, olives, etc. can be used to make the rolls.

Deviled Eggs
There are different versions of making deviled eggs, also known as stuffed eggs. They can easily be carried for an outing as well. You may choose to make the deviled eggs and store them in the refrigerator, till you want to serve them. Different ingredients can be used to make the stuffing of your choice. I often do not add too many ingredients, as I am of the opinion that eggs have their own taste and adding a number of different ingredients actually hampers the original taste.
