The Droid Bionic will only be available to Verizon subscribers, whereas the iPhone 4 is available to both AT&T subscribers and Verizon subscribers as well. This naturally means that the Droid Bionic will not sell as well as the iPhone 4, and moreover, the iPhone 4 has Apple's iconic brand name backing it. But there are certain aspects and specifications where the Droid Bionic can trump the iPhone 4, and as this Buzzle article on which is better iPhone or Droid shows, there are some areas where Motorola Droids can come out on top.
Hardware
When we compare the screen size of both these devices, the Droid Bionic emerges as the winner with a mammoth 4.3" screen. On the other hand, the iPhone 4 has a much smaller 3.5" screen. Both of these are TFT Capacitative touchscreens, so their response times are the same, but the sharpness and the screen resolution of the iPhone 4 is unparalleled. Retina-Eye display is what the technology that is used in the LCD-backlit screen is called, and it offers a resolution of 640 x 960 pixels. The Droid Bionic can only produce a respectable 540 x 960 resolution.
The processor is where the Droid Bionic emerges as the clear winner. It is equipped with a dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, a Tegra-2 chipset and a ULP GeForce GPU. Armed with 512MB RAM and 2GB ROM, this makes the Droid Bionic extremely fast and capable. The iPhone 4 has an Apple A4 chipset which also comprises of a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor and a PowerVR SGX535 GPU. The dual-core nature of the Droid makes it far more powerful, but this is an area that the iPhone 5 will excel at with its own dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, in the Apple A5 chipset.
The Droid Bionic also has an 8MP camera with autofocus and a dual-LED flash, whereas the iPhone 4 can only offer a 5MP camera with autofocus and an LED flash. The iPhone 4 weighs considerably lesser though at 137 grams, whereas the Droid weighs 158 grams. When it comes to memory space, the iPhone 4 comes in default versions with 16GB or 32GB memory, and no memory card slot. The Droid has an internal memory of 16GB and can be equipped with a memory card with a maximum capacity of 32GB. The battery life of the Droid Bionic is still unknown, but the iPhone 4 has up to 14 hours talk time (with 2G) and up to 7 hours talk time (with 3G).
Software
Choosing a winner between Android and iOS 4 is a tough task, because this is ultimately a matter of preference. Android is open sourced and allows you to customize your home screen with numerous widgets and themes. Moreover, multitasking works like a charm on Android. On the other hand, iOS 4 is very intuitive and extremely simple and fun to use, but the lack of personalization is a pretty big disadvantage. One problem with the Droid is that it will ship with Android 2.2 (Froyo) at a time when Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is becoming more common, and Android 2.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is just around the corner. Getting updates for Android is slightly complex and untimely, whereas iOS 4 offers very simple Over-The-Air updates.
The Apple App Store also offers more than 350,000 games and apps to pick from, whereas the Android Market offers around 250,000 apps and games. Most of the apps will be the same, but iOS does offer you more choice. One advantage of the Android Market though, is that you can get a full refund for paid apps and games within 15 minutes of making a purchase. One significant advantage of the Droid Bionic is that it supports Adobe Flash 10.1, and this is something that the iPhone will never do thanks to Steve Jobs's long running feud with the folks down at Adobe. Most websites have flash based content, so it is easier to view these websites over an Android smartphone.
